Woodworking Projects From Furniture Repair to Garden Sheds

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Thomas_Bruce]Thomas Bruce
My woodworking memories go way back to my grade school days, where I was fortunate to be able to hang out in my parents furniture repair shop, it was a great after school job and at 50 cents an hour, I could earn some extra pocket money.
It wasnt until I finished high school that I began to realize the abilities and skills I had picked up from my Dad in the "shop". We had most of the basic stationary tools like a table saw, radial arm saw, wood lathe, and also had various kinds of hand and power tools that I was able to use and learn on. If we needed to fix something, we could do it there.
As for the business, customers brought in anything and everything made of wood that needed repair, such as chairs, tables, desks, and with most of these pieces we did a whole re-finish job, starting with the stripping tank to remove the finish, then repair and re-glue, which many times involved making duplicate parts if some could not be re-used or were missing. After a piece was rebuilt, we picked a stain color and sprayed them with the appropriate finish. Polyurethane finish was not around much then, so clear lacquer was the finish of choice. The only part we did not do was upholstery, another business did that for us.
Where ever I was in my adult life, if I could have access to a wood shop, I would make many of the things I needed or wanted such as shelves, ball & bat racks for the kids, bird feeders, or even Christmas gifts. Many of you have done the same thing so what I have done here is nothing particularly unique.
These are the things that interest me and I am fortunate to have been exposed to it as it prepared me for a natural progression into home repair and construction which has been my life profession. My Dad is still with me and I still look to him for his knowledge and input, as he has always specialized in fixing some very "UN-fixable" things over the years. The education for all of us never stops if we are willing to learn or try something new.
The information online these days is truly amazing, so someone without extensive or much experience on any given subject can benefit from the experience and education of others.
As with a lot of "hands on" type of skills, most of us just need to be shown the basics of a procedure or task, with some clear direction and with a little time and practice, can get good at it, and if you have your own project idea in your head about what you want to do, the help is out there.
So the idea about a bird house, a doll house, or an all out garden type multipurpose storage shed, or even a remodel, the directions and instructions are available from those that have already done it.
There is a wealth of ready made plans for the aspiring small project woodworker and week-end carpenter, and if you take that big step to build your own tool shed, garden shed, kids play house, or any type of multifunctional shed, it will become a source of pride and a valuable asset to your yard and family for years to come.

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=David_Chett]David Chett
Whether you find yourself as a seasoned wood worker and just starting out, theres always the question of where to buy wood for woodworking projects. The more familiar stores such as Lowes or Home Depot carry lumber that is most commonly used but fails to carry most varieties often sought to be used. If this is the case, you can always look online for lumber liquidators also. While this is a good and positive source, you also have to deal with the added cost of shipping fees.
Before you decide to go out into the world of lumber purchasing, you need to understand a few things about the different types of wood. You will find (2) two main categories of wood; Softwoods and Hardwoods. When considering the softwoods categories, understand that this type of wood is generally used by construction industries with the purpose of framing and interior trimming. A few examples of softwoods include your cedar, redwoods, fir, and pines.
The hardwood is the more durable of the two and is often the preferred choice when building furniture, cabinets and flooring. In the hardwood category youll find maples, birches, mahogany, cherry, oak, and walnut. Also, when consider hardwood and softwood; understand that these direct terms do not refer to the hardness of the wood. Hardwood trees have broad leaves and are deciduous. These types of trees usually lose their leaves in the winter. Softwoods keep their leaves year around and are evergreens.
The reason hardwood is preferred for furniture is because they offer a large range of textures and colors than the softwoods do. Hardwood has two types of classifications which are domestic (U.S. grown) and exotic (Trees from around the world.) Youll also want to consider the grade of the wood when deciding where to buy wood for woodworking. The grade is a rating that refers to the number of the defects found in the wood. Priscillas bowl end grain tear out and what to do about it

Hi Everyone,

Well, it has stopped raining, snowing, and being generally crazy with regards to the weather around here so Im going to go down and take a look at the bowl.

In my last posting I indicated that I had hollowed it out more and here is a photo of that:

There is a problem here, however, and its called tear out. The grain in this piece of wood ran straight across the blank and when I cut across the grain, the ends of the fibers tore instead of cutting cleanly across. Here is a photo of that. If you look at the center of the bowl wall youll see a whitish area. That is torn grain.

There are several ways to deal with that-sanding, which can take a while to sand away, or you can stiffen the fibers with shellac or lacquer and then lightly re-cut the surface with a newly sharped bowl gouge:

And thats what Ive decided to do here. Ive sprayed some lacquer across the surface and its going to dry and harden the fibers. Then Ill re-sharpen my gouge and gently cut the surface until its smooth:

Im going to let this harden and Ill be back a little later today to work on it more.

Looking to Improve you Hand Sawing Game

Recently I kind of stumbled onto something that I think will help me become a better hand tool woodworker and I really want to pass the idea along to others out there who enjoy living shop life thats unplugged, even if its only some of the time.

First a little explanation. With my moms side of the family, no matter what else is going on, there is one universal language that you can always speak. The language of golf. I wouldnt call it an obsession, mostly just a shared passion and past time. As a young pre-teenager I remember one specific summer day spent at my Uncle Rods and Aunt Jills. A fantastic place located on an old tree farm in Northern Minnesota, I have many great memories of being allowed to run the woods until my legs nearly fell off. It has to be one of my top ten favorite places on the planet. On this day I was around for a summer vacation visit and my grandparents and probably several other family members were over as well. Of course the subject of golf came up and someone related how they heard that watching your golf swing on videotape can help you analyze it and see where you may want to make changes.

My Aunt Jill went and hauled out the video camera. I know technology has changed dramatically since then and these days I can even take reasonably good video on my cell phone, but we are talking about the old videocameras here. The ones that weight more than a bowling ball and can swallow up VCR tapes whole. She set it up and we all took turns recording 5 or 6 swings. Even my cousin Tyler who had to be around 3 or 4 years old took his turn. Then we went inside to look at the tape.

I dont remember what that tape told me about my golf swing. My current golf game would certainly be evidence that I probably learned nothing. But the other day I had a experience that brought that afternoon back from the dust of my memories.

I take a lot of pictures when Im in the shop. I dont know how many you would consider a lot but on a full eight to ten hour day with a lot of work getting done I can push it to almost 150 pictures. SOme are test pics and some are just plain mistakes, but I do like to take a lot of pics. I figure the more pictures I have the better it is to find the best ones to include in a blog article later, but I dont just take the pictures for the blog. They are kind of a personal documentation, a pictorial diary if you will, of the day in the shop, the steps I took in building a piece, and the techniques I used.

Recently I added an ingenious piece of technology to my arsenal, a tripod. Laugh if you want at the fact that it took me so long to come around to using one, but this has revolutionized the way I take pics in the shop. Before if I wanted a shot of myself working I had to find the right surface to balance the camera on and spend minutes trying to set the framing to fit everything into the shot. The tripod has sped up my work considerably and this added convenience has made it easier to take more pictures of me at work.It also makes it easier to set the timer on the camera and get some shots of me working.

Recently I took a series of pics of myself ripping a length of white oak by hand. I set the timer on the camera to take a series of multiple shots and went to work. Later on while I was going over the pics, cropping and editing them for myself and the blog, I noticed that in some pics my technique was less than spectacular. The end result of the piece I ripped was not bad at all, but the pictures dont lie and I think that maybe it could get better.
Heres a picture of my standard sawing stance. Yes I know that purists will point out that with sawing you should have only one hand on the saw after you get it started. A long time ago I suffered a pretty bad injury to my right shoulder that it has never completely recovered from. It pops and clicks and makes all kinds of fun noises which are fun when it comes to grossing out my wife and children, but basically translate into not being able to generate enough strength to manipulate a full length saw effectively. So I compensate with a two handed grip.
I completely realize that the need for my two handed technique is probably where most of my personal sawing issues come from, but thats what this exercise is all about, finding what you are doing and discovering what you could be doing different to put it right. Here I think Im looking pretty good.  My body position is set at a good angle to give me success and Im setting my force directly over the handle and into the blade. This is easy to see with the saw driving straight.
Here you can see Ive made an adjustment to my body position, not a big change but Ive moved my hips over, and probably changed the angle of my shoulders too. This means Im also changing the applied pressure to the saw handle. This is very evident in the bow of the saw to my right.
Heres a shot with a longer exposure, showing the blur of my hands as the move the saw through the wood. Here it would seem Ive again corrected my hips and have straightened out the saw as Im picking up speed and gumption to work my way through the board. The handle is listing a slight bit to the right though so that would demonstrate to me that I am probably getting some additional twisting from the waist due to the two hand technique.
Up until now when I saw I pay attention to the drive of my right shoulder as I try to maintain a straight cut. Though it makes sense I havent paid complete attention to the rest of what Im doing with my body. Just like you can change a golf swing with the minor details of where you place your feet, to how you hold your hands, to how you rotate your hips, you can make similar adjustments in how you saw. I would assume that this study of body mechanics relates to other hand tool practices like planing and drilling with a brace as well.

For those of us learning hand tool techniques I think this photo documentation, or even video documentation, could be an invaluable tool to seeing what you could improve on. Years ago when hand tools were still King, you would spend years working under a master, when we talk about this relationship we often talk about the instruction side of learning, and certainly a master would be a fountain of knowledge for effective skills and techniques. But the other side of instuction is evaluation. As an apprentice, the master would have opportunity to watch you work. He could see if you were tilting the saw towards your body on the uptake. He could see if your weight distribution over the joiner plane was flawed. He could see what you were doing that pushed your dovetail lines off square. And when he saw these slight mistakes, he could step in and help correct them.

I make a joke that I am "Nobodys" apprentice, as if my master carried the actual name "Nobody." In truth I consider myself Everybodys apprentice. I learn by watching and reading everything I can from everyone I can. Video from Roy Underhill, The Schwarz, Shannon Rodgers, or Bob Rozaieski and many others. Words from Peter Follansbee, Rob Pocolo, or any of several dozen others whose blogs I follow. But now I realize the part of the master / apprentice relationship Im missing is the evaluation part and I think its possible to fill in that missing piece by closely observing myself and my technique using pictures or video and evaluating myself. Ive seen the masters do it a lot, now I need to take some time to watch myself do it to see how I stack up.

Just like the perfect golf swing, the search for the perfect saw stroke may be elusive, but its out there.

Cheers!

Unlike My WifeIm Running Out Of Things To Buy

The problem with tool collection is that it doesnt stay constant.

Over the last four or five years I have been searching out tools that I wanted, nothing fancy, just the normal stuff that you would find in a cabinet shop around 1900. Because of the availability of these things, they were easy to find, so I was buying one or two pieces a month. That ain’t happening anymore.

At first, the hobby is not only easy, but it is damned cheap. A trip through the “Collectables > Tools & Hardware > Tools > Carpentry/ Woodworking” category on eBay can see you scoring one little item or another on an almost daily basis, if you, your wife or your bank manager let you. There are so many little bits and pieces made to do specific processes in woodworking; you could go nuts collecting them all.

Eventually, though, you locate, buy, receive, clean, sharpen and polish about all the little guys you think you will ever need, and then some, so you start looking for the more expensive, larger items.

The larger items aren’t as readily available as the little guys. There are a lot of listings, but most are junk and not worth the shipping costs, so your purchases tend to slow down rather quickly. While I restrict my choices to a narrow timeframe, from 1880 to 1910, while not an everyday event, it is not that difficult to come up with excellent examples. When I say “excellent”, I mean examples that I won’t mind using. I shoot for the high end of the “User” category. With these, I don’t feel my neck when I have to sharpen a blade, shortening it up in the process, or see a scuff show up on the tote or something.

Eventually, you pretty much end up owning more series and sets that you will ever find a use for, so you raise your sites a little higher, and start to shoot for real specifics. That’s when the blissful life of tool collecting really starts to drag. The more specific your quests; the higher the prices. The higher the prices; the fussier you become. The fussier you become; the less choices you have. The less choices you have; the less you buy. The less you buy; the less number of “buzzes” you get. It’s a bummer.

My Stanley plane collection, at this point, is missing an No.1, which I doubt I will buy—ever, a No.6, which I am looking for now, and a No.9, which I’m still up in the air about as I think buying one and using it would seriously make me nervous. From what I have seen available, these things are pretty vulnerable to damage.

I now have two complete sets of Stanley No.40 chisels; one for fine work and one for wailing on. I still look for better examples of the four patent dates, but if I don’t find any, it is no big deal.

I have more saws than I have room to store, so while I am still searching out a pair of excellent dovetails, I spend more time trying to figure out which maker to shoot for than I do looking for the damned saws. While I spent about a year and a half finding a matched pair of Jackson 12” saws, I have now come to realize they are a tad thick for cutting dovetails, and while they work, and work well, thinner blades would be better. As Disston made the Jackson blade in the same thickness as their own brand, buying a pair of old Disstons would be a waste of money. I would like to buy a pair of Two Lawyer saws, but at over 700-bucks for the pair, I would dust them, but I bloody well wouldn’t use them.

The only thing that seems to keep me going with this is my quest for more examples of H. E. Mitchell’s tools. I had an opportunity to buy an ultimate brace of his about eight months ago when The Tool Bazaar had one listed, but I felt he was charging way too much for it at 195₤. Since then, I have been royally kicking myself in the ass, to the point that I emailed Andy last month and asked if he would broker a deal between the guy who bought it and myself, but he declined. While I still search daily for Mitchell examples, it is pretty rare that one turns up, so even this quest has lost the luster it once held.

When I do score, though, it is like 27 Christmas’ and 42 birthdays all rolled into one, and score I did just a few weeks ago.

I have a saved search on eBay for anything listed in the tool collectable section that has the name “Mitchell”. I get emails from eBay regarding this search about twice a week. Rarely do they include the tools I am looking for, but on this particular day, I scored, and scored big.

Mateusz1979 had a ½” Ovolo plane by Mitchell up for sale. I immediately emailed him and asked if he had a “Buy it Now” price. We went back and forth a bit, feeling each other out, and eventually he emailed me a price that was beyond being fair—it was incredible. I quickly agreed, paid the bill, and a week later the plane arrived.

The plane is probably one of the better examples that I have of cousin Henry’s. I don’t know if Mateusz bought it as clean as it was, or he spent some time on it to clean it up himself, but either way, it didn’t need the coat of wax I gave it upon receiving it.

On top of that, the plane is a perfect addition to the set. I picked up a 5/8” Ovolo off of eBay a couple of years ago; a number two. Last year, Hyperkitten.com had a 5/8” Ovolo Number one that I was able to grab. This one is a ½” number two, the finishing plane, so if fits into the set well.

As the buzzes come less frequently now, when you get one, you savor it longer. As scoring a Mitchell plane has always given me the biggest buzz, the image above shows you what has been sitting on my bench since the day this last one arrived. I pulled everyone one of them from the drawer, brought the plow down from the shelf, and even added the counterstamp coin to the display and each time I walk in the room, I have a look and enjoy a smile. The collection is growing—its slow—but its growing.

Peace,

Mitchell

Lack Tables to Upholstered Ottomans

This weekend we finished upholstering our old Ikea Lack tables into skirted upholstered ottomans.

As you can see, they were in rough shape. This was the first piece of furniture that I painted before I did some research. This is proof that using the right paint and good techniques are important! See this post and this post for some tips that Ive picked up along the way.

Back to upholstering! Ive wanted to do this project for a long time, since we moved the desk into the guest room. That spot in our bedroom has been begging for something! Once we built the credenza and moved the printers off of the lack tables, it was definitely time!

I found two of these shower curtains at TJ Maxx for $14.99 and thought that they would be perfect for the ottomans. At 72x72, $14.99 is a great price for 2 yards of fabric (at a larger width than normal too!)

Heres how we did it:

The table was placed on the foam, and cut out with a sharp knife. Davids knife of choice is the filet knife since it is sharp and gives a straight cut. This is by far the easiest and most accurate way that weve found to cut foam.

The fabric was centered on the top so that the pattern was even, thick batting was placed underneath (you want the kind that you cant see straight through, so it isnt too stretchy). These were cut to size and stapled in place. We stapled in the center on all four sides first (pulling enough to round the corner, but not too hard because we still wanted it square), and then stapled the rest of the way to the corners, pulling down evenly as we went.

Heres how we did the corners:

the excess batting was cut off

fabric was folded back

and then folded down and stapled.

Legs were wrapped in fabric (like a present :)

A simple cording was made out of the top part the shower curtain which was solid gray. I was able to get enough, but cutting the gray part in half (lengthwise) and then sewing together to get the 88" needed to go all the way around. The cording was stapled on the side of the table where we wanted the skirt to start (3.5" from top)

Typically you want to cut fabric for cording on a diagonal, so that it bends easily around the corners. Since this fabric is a twill (weave that runs diagonally) and the corners werent too extreme, it bent fine for us.

We laid the fabric on the side (with a piece of cardboard underneath to hold it in place) lined up the pattern, marked the finished size by folding the fabric and pressing with an iron and then cutting out with 1" seam allowance. The raw edges were sewn and the panel was stapled just underneath the cording.

The panel was folded back down and pressed. We used the iron a lot in this project, it helps with accuracy and giving professional looking results.

Finally, the corners were left looking like this.

So with a needle, I went up through the underside of one panel through the bottom of the cording and down through the inside of the other panel and made a loop.

Then I sewed down the panel for about 2-3 inches until the skirt wasnt gaping. I sewed on the inside, hiding my stitches, only going through the first layer of fabric.

and done! whew!

I think Annabelle is going to like looking out the window here ...

Each ottoman probably took around 3-4 hours. This would of been faster if we didnt line up the pattern (use a smaller print to avoid) but we felt with such a large pattern, it needed to line up. and I love the result!!

Total cost:

Shower curtains: $14.99 x2 = $30
Foam: $20 (camping pad at Home Depot, we only used about half)

$50 total

We had a lot on hand, but if not Ikea lack tables are $7.99 ($5.99 for Black Friday I hear), I like the batting from here and the cording from here

Also, this could easily be turned into a no sew project by using no sew adhesive. I like heat n bond
Ive found at Joann Fabrics and Wal Mart. Just make sure to test on a scrap piece of your fabric, since sometimes you can see through it once ironed.

I love love love our new ottomans! Im hoping to add a few more things to this wall (especially draperies) stay tuned!
