Cutting Boards and Utensils

Here are some more cutting boards. Most of my boards are made from walnut and either birch or maple. The odd duck here is an elm board made with salvaged elm from Kings Road in Sydney, NS. It incorporates some of the natural shape of the tree it came from. Also pictured are some wooden utensils. There are spatulas in walnut, ash and cherry (perfect for stir-frying) as well as a pair of elm salad tongs. These are about as close as I come to a production item. They are made in small batches, usually out of leftover wood from larger projects. The batch of cherry spatulas has just been soaked in mineral oil. Once the excess is wiped off they can be put to use. Enjoy!

Pen giveaway free plans and happy birds

Note: The Inspiration Project will return next Tuesday.

*****

Got a note from 14-year-old Marcus Vandendaele from Harrisonville, Missouri who has been woodworking for two years. He makes a variety of projects, but has been earning an income selling his hand made pens. Hes already sold over 60 of them!

One of the toughest parts of running a business is getting the word out about what you do. Marcus doesnt have a web site, but maintains a Facebook page and is encouraging people to like it by holding a giveaway. All you need to do is like his page by August 31 and hell randomly select three winners. Whats he giving away? These two pens and a keychain. Head over and support him!

Wait, whats this? Marcus made one of my porch swing bird feeders too!

Not only is it a fun project build, but it makes for a smooth transition into...

*****
Frank Tartes outhouse bird feeder! Hes been making and selling these for about $40.

He also took the time to make up some free plans. Download them now, go forth and build bird feeders!

*****
And finally, heres something that may give you some more avian inspiration. Bill Wilson sent me over a picture of some wacky bird houses his uncle makes. (Another porch swing bird feeder in there too!) But I just love these houses. They remind me of Dr. Seuss.

Priscillas bowl end grain tear out and what to do about it

Hi Everyone,

Well, it has stopped raining, snowing, and being generally crazy with regards to the weather around here so Im going to go down and take a look at the bowl.

In my last posting I indicated that I had hollowed it out more and here is a photo of that:

There is a problem here, however, and its called tear out. The grain in this piece of wood ran straight across the blank and when I cut across the grain, the ends of the fibers tore instead of cutting cleanly across. Here is a photo of that. If you look at the center of the bowl wall youll see a whitish area. That is torn grain.

There are several ways to deal with that-sanding, which can take a while to sand away, or you can stiffen the fibers with shellac or lacquer and then lightly re-cut the surface with a newly sharped bowl gouge:

And thats what Ive decided to do here. Ive sprayed some lacquer across the surface and its going to dry and harden the fibers. Then Ill re-sharpen my gouge and gently cut the surface until its smooth:

Im going to let this harden and Ill be back a little later today to work on it more.

Still Recovering and Tracking a Balloonist

Hi Everyone,

Well, Im still recovering from the extraction and Ive got a cold so Im not back up into the shop just yet. So to entertain myself Ive been doing a lot of reading online.

One of the news stories that has caught my eye is that of Jonathan Trappe, an American from North Carolina who is attempting to become the first person to cross the Atlantic by floating over with a set of cluster balloons. He is sitting in a specially designed gondola that looks like a small boat and this in turn is attached to the balloons.

Hes currently over the Gulf of St. Lawrence having taken off from Maine. You can track him at: http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0s4Q04gaaoV9KnJ0UMb7h5b90telngQjv

I read somewhere the journey is expected to take between 3 to 5 days with a hoped for landing in France.

Im going to keep track of him while Im out of the shop.

More later,

New tool and the next Blue House Bowl

Hi Everyone,
It is absolutely beautiful outside today and Im going to treat myself to an hour or two in the wood shop a little later today.

But for the meantime good news. First: I got a set of pin jaws for the 4 jaw wood chuck for the lathe. This all means that Ill be able to create small diameter turnings a little easier. Here is a photo:

I am really jazzed about this!!

And I got a new shipment of turning blanks this afternoon and one of the blanks is going to be the next Blue House bowl. This year Ill be making the bowl out of a solid block of Indian rosewood.  Here are a couple of photos of the blank:

This bowl will be approximately 11-11 3/4 inches in diameter and about 4 inches high. It will make a great salad bowl or fruit bowl for some lucky guy or gal. I will keep you informed as to its progress over the coming months and let you know when you can purchase a raffle ticket. So join me on the journey and lets make a great bowl for a great cause.

See ya later,
VW

Salt and Pepper Shakers Pt 1

Hi Everyone,

Well, I went down to the wood shop today and began making a pair of salt and pepper shakers. As this is my very first time making spice containers I thought Id go slowly and make a single salt shaker today. And it came out really well:

As the plans are copyrighted I cant show you the process like I usually do but I can tell you that I made it out of ambrosia maple and I used a rubber bung to plug up the bottom. The completed shaker has a beeswax and mineral oil finish on it but I think Im going to test a varnish finish on the pepper shaker. This will hold several tablespoons of salt or pepper. Since its getting late and its getting cold, Im going to quit for the day and come back on Thursday and make the pepper shaker.

Oh, I also finally made a small diameter box out of red oak. Its about 1 1/2 inches in diameter and about 2 inches high. I dont have a photo for you but I will next time.

Stay tuned,
VW

How to Choose Bathroom Accessories and Towel Racks

Choosing towel racks as bathroom accessories is a bit more complicated these days, since technology has made a wide array of products. Towel racks include the Guest INOXS, Hotel Racks, including the single and double. You will also find a wide array of Key collections, ONDA, Studio, etc, as well as the swinging racks.

How do I find the swinging racks?

Online you will find a selection of swinging racks. The racks include the pure brass racks. The racks are idea for storing items. In addition, you have convenience, since you can fold the racks flat, which enables you to fit the racks in tight areas on your wall.

How is the brass made?

The racks are made of brass and protected by a coated finish. Few types are made of Brass Polish, or Chrome.

How much do the racks cost?

It depends on where you shop. At some stores online you can find the racks for around $63, yet if you continue looking you may find better deals. Keep in mind you are buying pure brass, rather than forged materials.

What about the Studio racks? What makes them special?

The Studio racks include the chrome polish, texture accent and chrome, and the brush chrome. The racks are made for contemporary baths, yet you can install it in most bathrooms, since it has a European class. The racks are brushed and polished with transparent coats of epoxy finishes. The finish makes the racks shine.

How do I choose width, height and depth?

It depends on what you want, however you may like the depth of 7 and ¾ inches deep, with the width of 11 and 7/8 inches and height of 7 ¾ inches.

How do I choose other bathroom accessories to match the rack?

When choosing other bathroom accessories you might want to consider soap dishes, glass shelf vanities, bath tissue holders, robe hooks, towel rings/bars, etc. You can also choose glass holders, since brass usually looks good with glass. Chrome also looks good with glass.

How do the Key series look?

You have a choice of stainless steel, which is polished, or you can choose the stainless steel made of Satin texture. The Key series are contemporary, which is great for installing in master baths, guest baths, modern baths, and so on. Victorian baths and Country baths, you may want to consider other series. Still, you can probably make it work.

How do I choose wall mounts to match the contemporary?

You have the choice of red, wood, and blue rosette wall mounts. You may want to compare the color of your shower walls, or bathroom wall before making a choice.

The colors seem to do well with purplish backgrounds, yet other styles may not allow you to combine the colors.

How are the towel racks mounted?

To mount you rack, you want to consider what you mount it to. You want to look for the sturdiest studs in the wall to screw into the area to mount. If not that, you can choose drywall. You drill a hole in the wall, using an anchor to stick an anchor lock in and then put in your screw, which spreads out the anchor lock, securing it to the wall. You can also use a T-Bolt. It depends on how large the rack is. To use a T-Bolt, you drill a hole depending on the size of the T-Bolt. Once you drill the hole, you push the T-Bolt in, which ears will pop out. You cannot pull the T-Bolt back out at this point.

Northville MI project polygons and other creatures

I need to cut some odd angles for the stairway shadowboxes. My objective is to make 5 equal polygons. My angles are 49 degrees, and the opposing 131 degree side. These cannot be achieved on my normal Delta 10" miter saw because its too shallow, making it a dangerous cut. I was going to try them on the table saw, but ran into some issues with that. My solution was to cut a template on the band saw, and temporarily secure it to my larger Dewalt 12" miter saw. This will give me a guide to follow, and the ability to cut the pieces more safely. Safety is the key - dont try any cut unless you feel confident in it!

The angles must be halved in order to come up with a properly mitered corner. Therefore, Im after a 24.5 degree cut, and a 65.5 degree cut. With the template I made, I can simply flip it over and backwards to achieve the opposing cuts! Here are the pics, and the final results...

If anyone has another solution for cutting odd angles, please email me - Id like to hear your ideas!

models and mockups

below is a post i wrote for the guild of vermont furniture makers blog back in 2009. i was waiting for photos of the actual show at the furniture society before i put it on my own blog, but i didnt attend the conference and so, never got any photos ... i wanted to have it here on my own space and low and behold select all, copy and paste, and here it is ... looks like i used my old camera ...
here are a couple of links to some other built projects .. models can be fast and extremely helpful ... click the photos to enlarge them

the big tables .. long mdf model in foreground
the claro walnut desk two mockups; one with the photo on top in cardboard and a welded steel one far right foreground
the duck bed ... and aluminum sample before the stee, copper and brass ... foreground center

The Furniture Society Conference is coming up again and, just every year, I think Ill go, and then I dont. I expect this year will be the same. Like some other things in life, we think we might be more interested at first, but then are distracted by more interesting things. Happens all the time. I did, however, submit an entry in the Designs in Miniature event which called for photos of models as design tools. Since I have a fair collection of them and find them valuable study and sales tools, and I like to build them, I sent some in. Here are the pictures. I dont have many of the pieces, but I do have ALL the models ... Click to enlarge the photos ...

odds and ends

ok ... thanksgiving weekends almost over ... back to work tomorrow. and im sorting it all out (hopefully) today. from the looks of it, ive got a lot of balls in the air, but some of them are either out the door or are in their final throes of being figured out. in the background, not pictured in this post is another custom dining room that will later get its own post. in the meantime, heres what well be working on monday ... click the photos to enlarge them.

above, a practice carving that will did recently for the corner of an upcoming dining table project. hell be doing more of those samples this week as he finishes up the corner cupboard you can see below.
lorne and i have been wrestling with this, what we are calling the x table. the concept came from one of our designer clients, and seemed pretty easy until i tried it .. i kind of had it, but lorne took the ball and ran with it and got it all figured out in the end. he got the angles figured out so they came off the saw perfect and precise and came up with the idea of assembling the two halves, one solid piece and one leg, and then gluing the half laps together last.

here you see the 1/4 scale, half scale and full size mdf mockup .. it was alm ost impossible to find the 12/4 white oak for the real thing, and we didnt have much extra so we were extra careful.
this is one of the halves. with the final concept we were able to reinforce the third leg tenonss with 4" timberlocks and glue, making the entire structure very rigid when it was glued up.
with the 3/4" glass with the 1" bevel. there will be a white pickled finish on the white oak.

and i stopped to see steve holman and hes coming along on the fancy reception desk that trevor helped him with ... thats going to be something ...

a walnut and steel coffee table is headed for the big city this week.
and will is finishing up another banjo project. this is an antique, complete pot and dowel stick, but the original mandolin style neck (banjolin) was missing. there were pictures available online so he could copy the original inlay style and once he adds the tuners, it will be headed for england i think.
the inlays with the original mandolin style, 8 string tailpiece in the jar.
and next up, a vermont banjo. all vermont wood including a dramatic hornbeam fretboard that is covered by the rubber bands here ...
this table will be leaving next week with the x table ... distressed walnut with flip up leaves on the ends and twisted steel supports by sam ... the schedules tight, but doable with a little luck and extra effort.

and in the background, weve got another custom dining room happening. a table, 8 chairs and a corner cupboard ... more on that project later in a separate post.

and we got the crazy little bobbin leg tables out the door last week. i missed that estimate by about 120% ... win some, lose some. cant say i wasnt warned ..
and lastly, below, im working with my chestnut cabinet client on a console table concept.
they like the bridges bench and were trying to see if it will adapt to console table shape.
looks promising to me. well see ... it looks like the last sunny and 50 degree day of this beautiful unusually warm vermont fall. wash the convertible and put it at the neighbors for the winter .. take the pump out of the pond ... winters coming ...
