A TABLE BUILT FROM PARTS double pedestal dining table

Recently I built and painted a large double leaf dining table

with parts from 2 different tables I had.

This solid 1.5" thick pine surface came from my sisters home.

Ive been doing my best to pull together some of my sisters decorating ideas and

Last month I did up a beautiful Regency table for her dining area.

So as a fair trade I got their old table to work with.

The pine oval wasnt just really substantial it also comes with 2 large leaves.

The apron however was 3" deep thin milled pine mounted in a rectangle with 4 straight corner legs.

The metal and wood pedestals and decorative apron came from another table we had.

That table top was made of MDF and had horrible water damage to the surface.

You cant see it in this photo but out it went!

The apron took time to retrofit to the new pine slab but it ended up working out nicely dont you think.

I layered the painting and distressing in white to show off her age and wood grain.

I think she is so cute when she is in her single round stage.

Coffee Table DONE!!

Well, I put the finishing touches on the coffee table yesterday so this project is officially DONE! Overall, this project did not take terribly long, considering I have a day job and all. After I did all the final sanding and everything, I wet sanded with 400 grit paper and some Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO). After I let that dry a bit, I then used Watco Danish Oil, Dark Walnut, and went over the whole piece, again wet sanding it in. I did two coats of that and let it dry for about a week. Then, I applied 3 coats of a satin wipe on polyurethane. After the third coat, I lightly sanded with 400 grit paper and applied two more coats. Lastly, I put a light coat of paste wax on it and buffed it out. Below are a couple pictures.

In this first picture you can see the legs from all angles as well as the double beed detail on the top.

This pictures shows the crazy grain in the top; this was NO FUN to plane, but I just took my time and made very, very light passes. I really like the look of this particular piece of mahogany. You can also see the scalloped edges in this shot.

Overall, I really enjoyed this project. I tried several new things to test my skills; first time using mahogany, first cabriole leg, first shaped aprons, first scalloped top, first double beed. Even with all of these "new" things, it was one of the easiest projects Ive ever done. I probably did my most thorough job of planning and thinking through each step with a focuse on the next step. I definately increased my abilities and concured the fear of trying new things in woodoworking, as well as better planning. Lots to build off of as a result of this project!

Have Smart Table Will Travel

I store my stock of wood in my "barn" which is about 40 feet from the shop. It is a pain for me to carry full sheets of ply to the shop to be broken down, so I often break them down at the barn. Today I needed to do just that, but didnt really want to drag out the saw horses and fasten the Smart Table to them.

I was standing there thinking that I needed to order a set of table legs when I realized that there was a platform right there in front of me, my utility golf cart.

This cart has been a life saver over the last year by letting me haul dirt, down limbs, fire wood, mulch, wood chips, air compressor, and even heavy tool buckets to wherever I needed them.

I measured the inside width of the bed lip and found that it was indeed not as wide as the Smart Table was long. So I cut a 2x4 to the width of the bed lip and fastened it to the bottom of the table top with the same spacing on either end.

2x strips added to the bottom, even spaces on the ends and inset from the sides so that it can still be set on the saw horses.

I could then just plop the table on to the top of the bed and I was ready to go.

The ends of the 2xs fit inside the bed lip.

The bungee keeps the support arms from sliding out while carrying the table by the handle (center of the close side).

I could then just extend the support arms, load the ply on to the table, and start cutting with the RipSizer.

When I broke for lunch, I was even able to leave the ply in place and pull the whole shebang in out of the sun.
