Readers DIY Headboard

Ive gotten a few emails recently from readers who have used my tufted headboard with wings tutorial to make their own version.

Sheila wrote to me first with a few questions and I was excited to see the finished product! It looks like she followed my measurements exactly because the spacing and height looks a lot like mine!

She also used the same nailhead as me :) Great job Sheila!

Cristina created a shorter version which turned out great too!

Finally, Brandi and David. Brandi had been showing David pictures from Pinterest for a while as a project reminder and he surprised her with it on Valentines day! How sweet, awesome job David!

I love seeing pics and hearing that my instructions were easy enough to follow :) Thanks so much for sending them in!

If youve used any of my tutorials, Id love to see pictures! Feel free to email me at sarah.m.dorsey at gmail.com

DIY Christmas Gifts Round Pet Bed

In the next few weeks, I thought I would share some simple DIY gift ideas for Christmas. I know the handmade, unique gifts are always my favorite :)

Today I am starting off with how to make a round pet bed without a pattern. If you dont have a pet, next week will have a gift for everyone!

So why no pattern? I found a bed that I liked, but couldnt find a pattern online or in store, so I decided to figure it out as I went. Sometimes thats part of the fun. Right?

The only thing that I purchased for this project was the fleece for the top, the rest was gathered from projects past. This is the perfect use for scraps of foam!

Here we go:

Cut out a circle of fabric. Mine was 38" in diameter. I place a dot in the center and holding a ruler in place measuring half of the circle (19") and mark with a pencil or fabric pen. Holding the ruler on the dot, I rotate till I have a circle and then cut.

Cut out pieces of foam approximately mimicking the shape leaving room to sew in between  (thinner is easier to work with - my center was a little high at 1.5") The side pieces of foam are optional you can just use poly fill, but I figured since I had it I would use it.

Cut out a fleece circle about 2" smaller than the outer fabric. Pin in place. You want to leave plenty of room for the hem on the outer fabric, about 2-3" is good.

Sew around the inner foam circle (1" or less is easiest to work with)

Sew between outer foam pieces (or where the poly fill will go), starting at the fleece and sewing to the center

Stuff the side pockets with poly fill and pin in place.

For the last steps I forgot to take pictures. Sorry! If you have any questions feel free to ask! Here are the instructions for attaching the ties so that the bed can be adjusted to lay flat or cinched together.

1. Cut 6 strips for the ties: about 18-24" long and 3/4" wide: I used fleece so I wouldnt have to sew the edges
2. Sew the center of the strip on the center of each of 6 sections, on the very edge of the fleece connecting it to the outer fabric - I just sewed a short line back and forth so that it would be durable. The ties will come through openings above the center seams next.
3. Fold the outer hem to turn under the raw edges, pin in place and then trim holes for the ties to come through. Each opening will have two ties coming out.
4. Finish the edges. I rolled the hem under and hand stitched the finished edge, since I found it too difficult to use the sewing machine. Heat n Bond no sew adhesive should also work, just make sure not to attach the ties to the bed, so that you can still adjust them.

I promise she does like the bed, she has recently gotten into a mood where she doesnt like getting her picture taken, hopefully she will grow out of it!

Annabelle likes to push against the side so it supports her, smart girl!

So far Ive made two beds like this for Annabelle and she loves them!

Ill be back next week to share another DIY gift idea!

My DIY Must Haves Power Tools

Last week one of my readers asked for a list of my must have tools for DIY projects. Since we move every few years (and pay to move most of it) we dont want to have a lot of extra stuff, so we try to keep our DIY supplies to a minimum (which can be hard!)

Today, I thought I would start with power tools, because 1. they are the key to building most things 2. they typically make projects easier and faster!

So here we go!

1. Cordless Drill/Drill Bit Set - We use this for pretty much every project ... for the most part it floats around our home! Cordless is a lot better than corded because it has better mobility. Our drill is a Craftsman from Sears and is still working great after several years ... there are a lot of great drills on the market (I think I would prefer something a little smaller, because it can be a little awkward, but David is fine with the size ...)

2. Jigsaw with wide straight cut blade (on ground in photo) - This is a great compact, versatile saw. Yes, typically used for cutting curves, but with the straight cut blade it can make fairly accurate cuts (not perfect)

Another tip for getting straight cuts is screwing a 1x3 or similar board to the what you are cutting and run the jigsaw along for a guide line, when done remove the screws and admire your cut! (make sure to screw into the part that wont be used)

The jigsaw may not be the correct saw for everything, but can get the job done (for most DIY projects) if you dont have a chop saw or table saw.

3. Dremel tool - has lots of great attachments to cut a variety of things, we mostly use ours to cut small amounts of metal, like the brass tube for the pendant light in the bedroom

4. Chop Saw - You can get by without (depending on the project), but if you are making a lot of straight cuts, this will save a lot of time increase precision! Ours is a Dewalt 12" Double-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw. Since it slides, we can cut up to a 14" board ... we used this to build the sofa table and the tv stand - these projects would of been basically impossible (or taken too much time/not accurate) without it. It is also crucial for cutting 45 angles like the frames for our floating gallery wall (This can be done with a hand saw and miter box, but if doing a large amount, the chop saw will save a lot of time and blisters)

An electric sander is definitely on the list, but I will talk about that with sanding/painting!

And last but definitely not least, below is the safety equipment that we use on a regular basis with these tools

A respirator (dont want to be breathing wood particles in!), Ear muffs to protect hearing while cutting or using the electric sander , and goggles to protect your eyes from flying debris! Thick gloves are also good when handling wood to prevent splinters

In the future? a table saw would be perfect for long cuts and a finish nailer/compressor would be great for upholstering! (I think my hands are going to be tired after finishing the cane chair!)

Ill be back soon to talk about the rest of my DIY list must haves!

I primed the cane chair yesterday ... painting up next!
